MANAGING DIRECTOR / LECTURER – THEATER
AND DANCE PROGRAM
The Theater and Dance Program at Oberlin
College invites applications for a 12-month full-time A&PS (Administrative
and Professional Staff) position, with lectureship status within the Theater
Department, reporting to the Dean of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of the
Conservatory of Music, with direct connection to the Chairs of Theater and
Dance and the Opera Director, starting in January 2013.
The Managing Director is responsible for
the day-to-day operations of the overall physical production activities of the
Theater and Dance Program; acts as Production Manager for three theater
productions, one dance production and two operas yearly, produced in Hall
Auditorium; is responsible for oversight of the 8-10 student/faculty
productions in Little Theater as well as numerous dance productions in Warner
Center. The Managing Director oversees the daily activity of the A&PS
members of the production staff as well as two Administrative Assistants and a
large number of paid student assistants. A large component of this position
involves managing the budgets, publicity, marketing, front of house operations,
and web based media.
Responsibilities:
Production -
Continuous supervision of overall production activity, staffing, facilities,
production budgets and calendars, and running of production meetings for
mainstage program events. Work with CTS (Central Ticket Service) Manager and
student staff to create publicity for Theater and Dance Program and its
productions.
Budget and Facilities -
Control over and responsibility for budget management of program and opera
theater productions. Consult with Theater and Dance Program Directors; report
to full program about budget on a timely basis. Maintain budget allocations for
student help lines, operating budgets, show budgets and endowed fund budgets. Building
representative for Hall Auditorium and Hall Annex. Work with Dean’s Office
business manager to request and allocate capital equipment expenditure budgets
for Theater and Dance Program. Act as sole signatory for purchasing and
reimbursement payments within the Theater and Dance Program and for the Opera
productions. Maintain Inventory system
for production areas.
Personnel Actions -
Supervise, monitor and provide evaluative feedback to Directors of Theater and
Dance and Theater and Dance Faculty about A&PS Staff and Administrative
Assistants; make salary recommendations to Deans and Human Resources as
requested. Direct supervision of CTS Manager and Program Bookkeeper.
Academic Areas -
Teach one or two courses per year in area(s) of expertise.
Management / Marketing /
Publicity
- Responsible for an expanded publicity effort including outreach to Northeast
Ohio area schools. Create more outreach to area media, TV, radio, web-based
media. Responsible for web pages for Theater and Dance and expand our
interactive outreach to alumni. Work with Development Office to create/expand
resources for endowed funds, and other development activities such as grants or
other funding opportunities for the Theater and Dance Program. Act as creator
and sole signatory on any /all contracts involving guest artists, and visiting
productions to Hall Auditorium and Warner Center. Work with program Secretary and program
Bookkeeper to secure housing, meals, per diem and any special needs of guest
artists. Expand Managerial / Publicity / Hospitality / Inventory duties to include
other college arts programs and work towards a smooth transition to new systems
as needed.
Other - Work
with Artistic Director of OSTF (Oberlin
Summer Theater Festival) and Conference Services as needed to coordinate summer
operations within Hall Auditorium and Annex.
Requirements: College degree and 5 years of practical
production experience in the performing arts; competency in public relations,
marketing, and web based media.
Desired
Qualifications: MFA in
Arts Administration, Design or Technical Production preferred.
Compensation: Within the range established for
this position, salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and
experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
