A monochromatic feast of powdered wigs, breeches, satiny dresses and aristocratic excess, the production, served in 10 “courses,” outlines de la Reynière’s story, stirring in fantastical elements to absurd extremes: comic encounters with Napoleon and Josephine, for example, and a banquet demonstration of the hot new technology the guillotine (“It will revolutionize capital punishment!”)."
