Josh Gad and 'The Book of Mormon' open to raves

Post Gazette: "The new Broadway musical I'm most excited about seeing? 'The Book of Mormon,' of course. Entertainment Weekly just handed the show an 'A' rating, saying, 'Teaming with 'Avenue Q' co-creator Robert Lopez to write a perfect book, music and lyrics, ['South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone' honor the tradition of great song-and-dance theater in all the best ways.'

This just goes to show that really great shows always sound horrible when you just hear a brief synopsis. 'A musical about Mormons.' That sounds awful. But what theater should do is make you look at a subject from a new angle. And that's what makes a musical about Mormons interesting. I'm really excited to see this show this summer. And I'm even more excited knowing that one of the guys is from CMU.

I think this is an example of: really funny people can do anything and people will love it. That guy, Josh Gad, could do ANYTHING and be hysterical. And this show has a huge advantage in that people who attend this show WANT to love it. I don't know how well this show could stand alone without South Park as a foundational pedestal. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are probably great and personable people. It's nice to open a show knowing that the people going to see it are people who already love your writing. I'd like to see what someone who has never seen South Park thinks of the musical. I bet a lot of the critics writing those articles are South park fans.

It is about time that Broadway gets a show that not only nods to other classical musicals that we all know and love, but a show that is fresh and creative. Although I was skeptical I knew that the directors (the creators of South Park) would not put up something that wasn't entertaining or something that didn't have a message. I would also like to say that there are actually three CMU alums in Book of Mormon: Rory O’Malley, Josh Gad, and Tommar Wilson.
