In The Wings - Art Director - April, 2010

American Theatre Wing: "Art Director Gail Anderson of advertising agency SpotCo brings her passion for graphic design to create visual identities for theatrical works. Anderson traces her career from the School of Visual Arts to the Boston Globe to Rolling Stone and now Broadway. She explains how many designs are created in the limited time leading up to a production, sometimes before the show is fully formed. Examples shown include Come Fly Away, A Behanding in Spokane, the revival of Hair, and the new revival of La Cage Aux Folles. A show's poster artwork is spun off into many mediums including print ads, marquees, billboards, bus ads, and television commercials."

I'm surprised no one's commented on this! The video is so cool! I studied graphic design in pre-college, and pretty much absolutely hated it, I'm not going to lie. Sitting in front of that computer for the amount of hours I did...playing with fonts and sizes and fonts and sizes was miserable. I suppose it's not too far off from paperwork headers...but I just found it so dull. And I know part of that is because we weren't given too much freedom, but I could never do it regardless. However, it's always interested me because the scope of options one has when designing something like a Broadway show header is ENORMOUS. I've often wondered who creates Broadway posters, and the video did a great job of showing the different steps one takes to creating the final project, etc. This is so awesome, and good to know in general. I'll definitely be paying attention to posters more from now on.
