Philip Glass and JoAnne Akalaitis Collaborate on ‘The Bacchae’
NYTimes.com: "Mr. Glass, now a celebrated composer, and Ms. Akalaitis, a seasoned director and former artistic director of the Public Theater, which produces Shakespeare in the Park, have been working together for more than 40 years, for 15 of which they were also married. Their collaborations include an opera based on Kafka’s “In the Penal Colony”; a production of Jean Genet’s “Screens,” with music by Mr. Glass and the Gambian composer Foday Musa Suso; several productions of Beckett plays, including a controversial staging of “Endgame” at the American Repertory Theater in 1984; and numerous productions in the 1970s and 1980s with Mabou Mines, a company that Ms. Akalaitis and Mr. Glass founded with three friends."
