'Spider-Man' to star unknowns
Variety: "Julie Taymor appears to be considering going the unknown route in casting the leads for her return to Broadway with 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.' A nationwide casting call has been announced running April 9 through May 27 in Orlando, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago and Austin."

This whole thing really confuses me. It's the first operation i've seen that recently that is pouring dollars upon dollars into an idea - that seems to be motivated in an artful manor. They obviously know that they aren't going to make all of their money back. So why do it? Is it for the sake of art? And if so - why are they reverting to the stand by 'adapt a movie' - a sure known crowd pleaser.
All in all... very confused.
I'm glad they're casting unknowns. For one thing, Spiderman as a musical is already a sure commercial success--there's no reason to cast celebrities to pull more people in. This will give unknowns a chance to make their big break.
