7 Tips for Efficient Meetings

WebWorkerDaily: "When you do hold a meeting with a client or with your teammates, either face-to-face or as a teleconference, you want to make it as effective as possible so you get the outcomes that you want, without wasting anyone’s time."

"Only invite people to the meeting who need to be there"

This is such great advice. I cannot even count the number of meetings I have attended that completely waste my time because I am not needed. I find that this is because the organizer of the meeting does not have a clear idea of what they want to accomplish during the meeting. Either that or people are left waiting till the end to address issues of direct importance to them. Better to push these issues to the beginning of the meeting so that those people can leave early.

I think that these tips are wonderful. It is an art to keep a group of people interested in the same thing for an extended amount of time, and anything that can make this easier is a help. Sometimes it is also nice to see some common sense things written down on paper.

After having all of our group meetings complete for our class projects, I read this article. While we technically did all the things on the list the meeting was a little out of control. Somehow I feel this list should be longer. The common sense of structure is there but the common sense of interacting and working cooperatively needs to come first. If people are trained in team working skills they can function without as much structure as this list implies. With this structure in pace, but with no team work skills, the group will (and did) have issues.
