Seeing The Fly as an opera sounds terrifying. I have to say, getting the movie's director, composer, costume designer and creature designer together again to work on it as an opera seems like a creative idea, but in my opinion "science fiction" and "opera" shouldn't mix.
Unfortunately.... I have seen the movie. Fortunately I know I will not be attending this opera. Though it sounds interesting, it seems more likely to be a disaster if the opera is anything like the movie.
I'm glad that musicals aren't the only theatrical genre that are selling out. A opera version of Brokeback Mountain? Really? What's next...the ballet version of The Dark Knight?
Contrary to other commenters, I'm actually quite amused/enthusiastic about this adaptation. I think it may end up being a fantastic marriage of two things so disparate that no one has ever thought to combine them before. There's a very small chance that ideas that look horrible on paper turn out quite catchy indeed (examples I cite are Kingdom Hearts, the first PotC movie). io9 has their own take on the opera, as well as pointing out that the reviews have actually been quite positive.
