Opera in the buff for opera buffs
The Dallas Morning News Performing Arts: "In recent years, with all the talk from general managers, stage directors and go-for-broke singers about making opera as dramatically visceral an art form as theater, film and modern dance, traditional boundaries of decorum have been broken. Opera productions have increasingly showcased risk-taking and good-looking singers in bold, sexy and explicit productions."

I really don't think that this is that big of a leap. Sure, it is pretty new for opera, which has traditionally been less gritty and realistic and more ornate and artistic. However, this fits in with what is happening in film and theatre, as well as in the world in general. Explicitness is becoming more and more acceptable, and this is a natural next step for opera as it becomes more like film and theatre.
