Tourists back on Broadway

Reuters: "For American and foreign tourists, there has been magic in the air on Broadway. Tourists accounted for about 65% of the 12.3 million tickets bought for shows in New York in the 2006-07 season, the largest percentage in the past two decades, and attendance by international visitors has surpassed pre-September 11 levels."

I am surprised people under 18 accounted for almost half of the 3.2 million tickets sold. Maybe thats just more and more grand parents dragging their kids but I'd like to hope not. I thought I had heard other talk elsewhere that on average, the average age of theatre goers was going up. Maybe not.

What actually surprised me the most was that tourists make up only around 65%. I know that is a really high percentage of the sales, but it just seems like it would be higher. I also agree that theatregoers under 18 account for that much. When we normally think of people that normally go the theatre we think of people much older. But today with a lot of Broadway shows being directed toward that audience, such as Legally Blonde and other familiar shows, the ages that Broadway sees are gonna be much different.
