ABC News: "A study of more than 5,000 youngsters in Switzerland has found those who smoked marijuana do as well or better in some areas as those who don't, researchers said Monday."
I completely agree with the idea presented in this article. I interpreted it as, "people need to do a wide range of activites, and those who live slightly on the wilder side, but do not abuse, more likely have a well grounded mind. Therefore, they probably will do as well or better."
Thinking back more to high school, this was certainly true, the greater percentage of kids who were at the top of the class and doing extracirricular acitivites were also the ones smoking pot.
I agree with Rico. A large percentage of the kids in my school used to smoke a lot of pot however they got bored with it quickly so they started doing more intense drugs. By the time I was a senior i would say that probably 25% were doing drugs stronger than pot such as cocaine. It's scary how addictive drugs are to certain people.
In my high school experience pot was actually not a prevalent as i have heard it is in other areas, but the people who did were certainly the people who were more socially active outside of their marijuana usage. The kids who abstained seemed disonnected from the people who did. There was a sort of rift socially between the people who smoked and the people who didn't. As far a academic performance is concerned though, both groups had their exceptional students and their slackers.
It would be interesting to see this same study done with students in the US. I just have this feeling that we wouldn't have such positive feedback on students' academic and social performance.
I found out last week that 3 girls in my highschool were just expelled because they had bought and sold pot in the dorms. The one girl who ratted out the other 2 was also expelled even though she wasn't a part of it at all. She had just had the bag in her pocket coming back from a party. Two different girls that were with her who were actually smoking the pot were only suspended.
I remember girls in my class who just bypassed pot and started making trips to the drug store. When you are filthy rich and bored.......
UHM. Weed? what a weird post. HAHAHAHA I would not really know. I'll stick to tobacco. It has to be illegal for some reason. Thats funny how your emotions and personalities change bcuhs of it.
A majority of the beginning of this article seemed to say absolutely nothing. However, I thought it seemed fairly logical that those who smoked marijuana had closer relationships with their peers. The same is generally true for smokers in a workplace. They use their addiction as a way to socialize with others and escape from the work setting even if only briefly.
having been in Lausanne this summer, and many other parts of Europe, i was able to witness first hand their outlook on marijuana. i think it is funny how the United States and the UK are really the only countries that have such a strong negetive outlook on the plant and it's uses. while many countries may have rules against the use of marijuana, i have always found that these are more suggestions, then the law. as far as the study goes, i encourage it. i think it is important to bring into the light that so many of the things that are "bad", are actually not nearly as bad as the government says.
