My current irritation with Guys and Dolls is less about Guys and Dolls and more about CMU's ticket policy. I'm a little frustrated that comp. tickets aren't given for Saturday night performances. My parents are in town, and it's probably the only show they'll ever see here since flying from Texas isn't that cheap, and I ended up paying alot for three tickets to Guys and Dolls evening performance. I really wish there was some sort of policy where you get a certain number of comp. tickets to a Saturday night performance, because I get that we need subscribers in order to keep our finances afloat, but really, I don't like paying to go see a show that I just did 3 weeks of crew on...
i think it is great the author of this article included the runyon stories. hopefully people will read up on these stories before coming to see the show, so they can be in more of the same mind-set of the director and designers.
okay, great.
guys and dolls will reap in lots and lots of money into cmu, and apparently we've been losing money on our productions, or something to that effect. But simply from an actor's point of view, carnegie mellon has the reputation that it does because it mounts edgy, artistic, challenging pieces of theatre. NOT because it does old shows that were great in the 50's for a REASON, really well. Let's get some shows with more...how do you say...balls? guts? glory? how about something that may just offend some people? please! Regardless, it's going to be a great show of course, and I'll see it probably more than once...doesn't mean i won't be wishing for more...
I wonder how well the director's and designers' intentions are delivered through the show. Well, that is, of course, to say if they ever finish tech-ing the show. And it's really refreshing to see an article that is not about the WGA or Local 1 strike which is kind of sad at the same time.
It seems like a director with a lot of credibility. From the surface it seems like the show is really coming along, but there was also rumors that they are a bit behind. Well excited to see the show... for free!
Having seen and done the glitzy guys and dolls before, it will be interesting to see the version CMU is doing. The ticketing for the show seems expensive, but when compared to a show on Broadway it then seems cheap. I like how the author tied in the history of G&D into how CMU is performing the show in a traditional fashion.
I am really excited to see this show and see the design elements of it. From what I recall, the intent was to do a little bit of a darker version of one of the staples of musical theatre. I will definitely be seeing this one and am extremely excited to see how the production is when it opens.
I'm on ghosts run crew, and unless a call is canceled (for which I'm not holding my breath) I wont even be able to see guys and dolls, which is disappointing both because I was on build some and want to see the set finished with stage lights, and because I want to see the actual show.
I am really curious to see how this actually turns out. I have been very much involved with the build and the lighting install. From what I am seeing, the show is turning into the SideShow version of Guys & Dolls. I have been hearing that the original design is just very dark for this kind of musical, and that is it is gradually be altered because the music can't hold up this level of "dark".
Ghosts run crew can see Guys and Dolls on Saturday 12/1, after the notes session. Get your tickets now.
