Water Everywhere

The New York Times: "'Fuerzabruta,' a new production from Diqui James, who helped create the show 'De La Guarda,' is a wordless fusion of physical and visual feats. The auditions included performers in a pool, left."

I must say for all the difficult projects we try and special effects that are designed today, water is still a really taboo thing for a show. I can recount countless dance company production meetings where someone asks for water and is immediately shot down. We as technicians should embrace water as just another difficult effect to deal with, and get over our fear of it. I know it's hard to deal with but look at how popular "O" and Le Reve are in Vegas.

Having seen De La Guarda a few years back, I would strongly recommend anything by these producers. Their style of work is a totally 'in your face, taboo spectacle' that breaks all theatrical convention.

For those who dont know the show, the 250+ audience is shuffled around a large room where all of the action of the show happens above you, (i.e. dancers flying around above with strobing lights while dropping stuff on the audience's heads,) It is gorgeous spectacle that is sort of a meld between concert, dance show and theatre.

I would be fascinated to see a show in this style that tried to portray a message. It seems like is has such potential based on its relationship with the audience. But then again, De La Guarda may have tried this, but i was only 14 when i saw it.
