New, virtual orchestra sounds ominous note

Rocky Mountain News: "An Austrian company, Vienna Symphonic Library, has developed software that permits the computer user to craft symphonic compositions in vitro, if you will."

That's very interesting, I listened to the sample recordings and was not able to tell the difference.
However I agree with Daniel Kellogg on the point that nothing will be able to replace a live performance. It may be able to help for soundtracks and composers trying to write music, but there is something unique about watching a live orchestra perform and as much as you record different types of notes and sounds, it is impossible to recreate that experience you get from a live performance.
You can compare it to things like hand drafting vs. auto cad, they both do the job, but there are things that you can do hand drafting that just aren't as good with auto cad. Although this same situation has come up already with animation vs. hand drawing, I don't think it will happen with music because live performance is such an important part of music.
