China imposes 5-year ban on film maker Lou Ye

Yahoo! News: "Lou did not clear the film, a romance set against the backdrop of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests that also features explicit sex scenes, with China's state censors before going to Cannes in May."

I really don't know much about China's government, but can they really ban someone from making films, can't he just go to another country and make a movie? I can understand why the government would want to censor things, but he was summiting it to a film festival that doesn't even take place in China. It's just a film, China should lighten up a bit.
