"Ben Hur" to ride again in French football stadium

Reuters.com: "The spectacle, mounted by veteran impresario Robert Hossein, will be biblical in scale, with a cast of hundreds recreating a battle at sea, a gladiatorial combat in ancient Rome and a live chariot race in the 15,000 square meter (17,940 sq yard) arena."

All I can think about reading this article is...THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THAT CAN GO WRONG. In Production Planning, Stage Management, and Production Management, we learn about "red flags"....lets just stick one on this whole production. Doing something on such a large scale causes a few things: people are spread too thin and work doesn't get done; boasting about its magnitude can lead to not living up to expectations; people being drug about by chariots and live animals mean unpredicatble disasters...I have a headache just thinking about putting up something like that. In a football stadium. With dangerous stunts. How does one call a cue? "Call the cue when extra #145 raises his hand and points at extra #199." It could go off without a hitch if EVERYTHING is thought out and EVERYTHING is choreographed. Can't wait to hear the end result.

BRAVO! This is such an exciting venture. It reminds me of the shows that the Romans would have in Ancient Rome (ok, I know, I'm showing my geek card...but its true). I think that though there are a million things that can go wrong, its not any different than any other show - its just a bigger failure in front of more people in a slightly more dangerous setting. This is the kind of thing that is really thinking outside of the box and I really support the people who came up with it. I can't wait to see how it ends up.

yes this seems like an impossible to go right production, but if they are planning something this big, im sure they are going to have the resources and planning to make sure everything goes correctly. i can actually see this working, however i dont see it touring very well, at least not on the same scale as the original. and then to do such a production and not have it be the same when it tours would be disappointing.
