I think Disney is right to be worried about over-saturation. The extent to which Disney taking over Broadway is reminiscent of cirque's Vegas growth. Too much of the same thing in the same city is bound to create problems. I love Disney spectacle as much as the next guy, but between Disney and Jukebox musicals, what room will be left for unique work? Before long, Disney will not only be filling all the Broadway houses, but it will be redefining how theatre is created and viewed. This is certainly what cirque has done to the circus. But, cirque is still alive and successful, maybe Disney will have the same luck.
Unfortunately Jake is right on this one. It's like making 101 Dalmations part 8 coming out next fall. There is a definitive line between art and money and unfortunately Disney has been going doing the wrong path for quite some time now. They recently closed the production of Tarzan in Animal Kingdom as well to make way for another Disney production, but as Jake said they are taking over Times Sq like Starbucks in on every corner (which im not complaining about). What's next? An amusement park area in Brooklyn?
I agree with Jake that Disney should be worried, however I am sure that the tourist will go and see any pretty show that Disney puts up and Broadway. What i really hope is that Disney estiblishs there presenece on Broadway and then moves into creating more artistic productions. In the past we have seen Disney create real pieces of art, however lately they have been drifting away from that, I just really hope they drift back.
