So true. Even just learning to read music is an invaluable skill. Jazz is so much harder because a lot of the riffs and notes are spontaneous and are moved within the artist. I might be working in Opera over the summer, and I was asked if I could read music. I played the violin in elementary school...even though it was a long time ago, I remember what the notes mean and I can pretty much remember how to play. Its amazing how that stuff sticks with you, from the time you are ten years old. Music is such a great tool to learn because it helps with literacy, with hearing skills, listening and interpretting and keeping a rhythm...all things we could benefit from in the theater.
