Robotic dolphins could replace live creatures at theme parks

blooloop: Special effects company Edge Innovations has created a robotic dolphin to potentially replace live cetaceans in captivity in aquariums and theme parks across China.

In response to the coronavirus crisis, China has implemented strict limitations on the import and export of wild animals.

This topic really helped me understand the issue of animal captivity. As one researcher said, dolphins placed in zoos for entertainment live in what for them are “bathtubs.” These robots could definitely help curb the market for zoo animals and entertainment animals.
I wonder if it would become less of an experience knowing the animals are fake. For young kids, I'm sure it's the same. But I think some parents might value having the real experience with the animal. Can you say you’ve really seen a dolphin if all you’ve seen is some plastic animatronic? I do think zoos and these parks are becoming outdated- I’ve never been to a large park with dolphins, and I know some of my peers haven’t either.
I wasn’t able to find any updates on if these robots were successful. This article was written five years ago, so I was hoping for some more information on how the initiative has expanded. The price was outrageous, with one article citing $5 million, and another saying up to $26 million per robot.
