Neal Stephenson running Magic Leap content studio in Seattle

Business Insider: Secretive startup Magic Leap, which is developing a new headset technology that integrates computer graphics into the real world, is ready to move into its new office in Seattle that will also house a team of creators led by famed science fiction author Neal Stephenson. Magic Leap, with Stephenson's help, is currently recruiting additional producers and talent for a content studio based in Seattle, multiple sources tell Business Insider.

Magic Leap has long been my dream company to work for, and one of the key reasons I love it is its emphasis on content. As a tech start-up, Magic Leap is on the frontier of entertainment technology and specifically the field of VR. What makes them different from companies like Oculus and Microsoft (Hololens) is that they are venturing on the creative side at the same rate. I believe that the advancement of technology should be accompanied by the advancement of ideas and stories. If a new platform for storytelling like AR/VR doesn't have fitting stories, then the technology is basically wasted and its status will just be some fancy ornament. However, as companies like Magic Leap pushes for more, better content on high-tech platforms, VR entertainment will more likely be telling more interesting, meaningful stories that are unique to the format and to our generation, and it will also be more likely to be welcomed by a wider audience.

Anyone that has read Snow Crash should hardly be surprised that this is one of the things that Neal Stephenson is doing with his time now. I am happy to see that my favorite author is doing things worthwhile of green page articles, although I personally think that most of the things he has done are worthy of green page articles. Magic leap looks like it could be doing some really cool stuff, the GIF of the whale leaping up out of the gym floor is something to see, I wish I really could see that. I wonder exactly what Stephenson’s philosophical goals are behind working with the Magic Leap people, they seem to be pursuing a more AR focused product, rather than completely VR, which has been Stephenson’s wheelhouse. I just hope that Stephenson isn’t actually building the world that he wrote about in Snow Crash, although, sometimes I do wish that my pizza was delivered with that kind of urgency.
