The Carnegies get ready to rumble in a cultural clash

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Do you have a favorite item or exhibit in the Carnegie Museums? Dippy the dinosaur, perhaps? Or the Miniature Railroad & Village train exhibit?

Beginning Monday, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh will be celebrating its 120th anniversary with Clash of the Carnegies. This bloodless bout will pit the four Carnegie Museums — The Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Science Center, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Art — against each other.

The Clash of the Carnegies is a really cute way to get people thinking about and visiting the museums. One of my favorite exhibits in the natural history museum is the “Arab Courier Attacked by Lions”. I remember the first time I saw it during Beth’s drawing class and I was taken away by how realistically positioned the taxidermied animals were and the attention to detail. Which is why I’m really surprised the museum only paid $50. Now, at that time $50 is what $855 is now, but that still doesn't seem like enough money for three taxidermy animals and one human (Is the human real? Or is it wax. I like to think of it being wax). I wonder if it was sold at that much because it was a museum buying it so they got a discount or if taxidermy really just costs that little. And now I want to research taxidermy.

Being from Pittsburgh, I think that is a wonderful idea. While Carnegie himself may have been controversial in some aspects when he was alive, his family's impact on the region today was been wonderful. I think that video was also wonderful with some Pittsburgh icons, such as WTAE anchors, Rick Sebak, Pittsburgh Dad, and more. After hearing about Clash of the Carnegies, I wanted to go visit the museums and revisit all the things I have seen before and I think that was one of the underlying purposes of the advertisement. Although I did like the marketing push, I did not really understand the name of the program. "Clash of the Carnegies" makes it seem like I am voting for my favorite museum, while the goal was to vote for your favorite pieces in each museum. With that in mind, it is hard to choose because there are so many brilliant, interesting pieces in each museum.

honestly, I am so enamored with Pittsburghs love and focus on its museums. I was at the Carnegie museum this weekend. which by the way, I am so grateful that I have free admission and I wish other students were as appreciative of this great institution that they have right down the street. anyway, I was there, sketching the animal exhibits, an activity I love and around me there were trick or treat stations set up for kids in Halloween costumes to learn something, then receive candy. I was so delighted by this. I went to preschool- kindergarten going to school at the Fort Worth museum of Natural History. I love museums and the fact that they are promoting museums for children and adults in such inspired and fun ways makes my heart happy. this will show kids that museums aren't just boring places you're dragged to on field trips, but fun places of learning. so kudos to Pittsburgh for being such a learning environment always.

This is an adorable idea. I love how this friendly competition also serves as publicity for the public to go see the entered artwork/experiences. I wish I had more time, because I would love to see the exhibits that each museum feels is their best. The four Carnegie Museums have so much to offer the city of Pittsburgh, so it is great to see them find ways to pump up the community.
