A Gang of Despicable Ghouls Takes Over a Cathedral in NYC

The Creators Project: Every year since 1990, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine—the fourth largest Christian church in the world, located in New York City’s Morningside Heights neighborhood—hosts an event one wouldn’t expect to witness on holy grounds. At the Cathedral’s Halloween Extravaganza, visitors are greeted by a ghoul playing the cello and a giant, quivering spider hanging on the Rose Window.

I really like that they are able to put this show on in a church. I’m not what any one would call particularly religious but I find churches fascinating and beautiful from an architectural stand point, and would love to be able to do a show in one. Its not what most people would think of as a theater but in a way its meant for the same purpose, they’re both intended to hold a large number of people and give a group or individual a stage. Sure there are differences but I think it would be fun and incredibly interesting to try and find a way to, for example, perform a traditional Broadway musical in a church. Now that wouldn’t be very practical or make much sense, but there are other types of show that could make sense if they were performed in a church or similar kind of space.

I kind of like this flash mob like thing but I'm not sure of its right for a church. As its understood obviously people are not all too happy about something like this going into a church. I think something like this should be put in an old abandoned church so that it could avoid all of the negative publicity. Since people go to worship there it shouldn't be a place for entertainment to stray away from that. But it brings up the question why not? I've seen church groups use a movie theatre space because they have no church, why cant it be switched? But because the movie theatre is a "space" and a church is a "sacred space" to some that is why we understand it as such. If the church is out of commission then i see it as a space and not a sacred space. I've always thought it would be cool to convert a cathedral or something into a apartment loft/house. I love the architecture and the style so why cant it be an aesthetic for a home? I thin this type of mind set is what the people doing the ghouls have when doing a entertainment event like this.
