Clothing is a very big part of pageants! What a contestant is wearing can either make or break their performance in the pageant. Sometimes I watch these pageants and think, “Wow that girl is butt ugly! Luckily she is wearing a really nice dress, so she isn’t that bad looking.” Other times I think, “Holy cow! That dress is so hideous, but the girl wearing it is gorgeous!” This is a real credit to the fantastic designers and stylists that work on these shows that help the girls achieve the looks that they do. What this article really makes me question is if these very intricate evening gowns should be considered costumes. On one hand they are obtained and worn solely as part of a production. However, at the end of the day the girls still own the dress, whereas with a costume it gets returned after closing night. So are the girl’s outfits really costumes?

I love to watch pageants, and I agree with Jason that clothing is one of the most important parts to the latter. The clothes can determine whether a contestant is deemed a winner or not. Looking at these outfits, I am utterly confused, though. The point of a pageant is to look beautiful, yet most of these outfits consume the models rather than work with them to create something beautiful. I think it would be interesting to hear with the designers were thinking when they created these costumes. There is an interesting balance of overwhelm and a little bit of sensuality which makes me uncomfortable. It’s an odd concept for me to have those two ideas juxtaposed in such a way and such extreme colors being used together. It may be that I do not like the designs, but I do not think that many of the costumes effectively got across the idea of a bird because of just how overwhelmingly large the costume pieces became.

I loved a lot of these costumes. Specifically I loved the ones that executed two things: Showing off the country and showing off the model. There were several dresses that did one or another, and those were pretty unsuccessful. For example: The Miss Korea dress completely covered the model so not only could you only see her face, her body shape was completely lost in the layers and layers of insanely over-patterned fabric. This overall would be most unsuccessful. Going too far in the other direction would also yield not so good results. I saw several models wearing what looked like plain red dresses, which had nothing that symbolized the country that these girls represented. The dresses that stood out to me the most were the ones that perfectly blended the heritage of the country and showed off the beauty of the girl. As for how overwhelming the dresses are, I actually enjoyed seeing such insane, and massive dresses, because, honestly, where else would be an applicable place to put these incredible dresses other than on a runway? These costumes were a blast to look at, and I can't wait for next year's.

Holy Cow! If I thought costume making was difficult and intricate, the Miss Universe contest most certainly through me for a loop. The amount of detail that went into these costume pieces are extraordinary. With each representing the culture of where they are from, I would hate to have to be the judge for this part of the show, because how can you possibly pick from the different contestants? Oh wait, I just found my favorite being Miss Argentina, I think that might be because of how clean it looks, simple, but elegant. It’s nice to see what each person brings to the table, although looking at the costumes, I’d need to do some research to figure out what kind of bird in particular they are representing. One thing is for sure though, there is no need to get me that dressed up to look that fabulous, I mean look at me, I’m kidding. But seriously, those costumes are just out of this world.
