Theatre In Black And White: Matt Lyle's The Boxer
Live Design: Director Kacie Smith was wary. Sure, she could stage a play without words, in the tradition of the black-and-white films of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. But seriously, was it even possible to stage a play with live actors in black and white?

This is so cool! I had no idea that this kind of thing was possible, and it sounds like the effect was very successful. From a production management standpoint, the creative team clearly did a great job of planning for possibly having to give up the black and white look if it didn’t work right by planning for extra tech time and designing their respective elements so that they could work under both lighting looks.
This kind of design choice is one that demands a certain time investment and level of commitment from the team, but clearly pays off because the effect is so spectacular and unexpected. I’m sure this production drew large audiences, because it’s very much out of the ordinary. I would love to see this, the shift from black and white lighting into the color sequences must have been so surprising and exciting as an audience member.
