‘Mary Poppins’ flies onto Paramount stage

Elgin Courier-News: It takes more than a spoonful of sugar to make Mary Poppins fly.

“Every scene is a challenge,” said director and choreographer Rachel Rockwell of the musical. “Mary Poppins flies multiple times in the show. In another scene she goes up a bannister; then the characters get sucked up the chimney; we have kites that fly. Every single scene is tough. It’s probably the most technical show I have ever done. It takes an army of people planning for the better part of a year to make it all work. We all need to be 100 percent on our game.”

“Mary Poppins” will be presented from Nov. 26 to Jan. 4 at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora.

Mary Poppins was one of my favorite Disney movies as a child, absolutely loved it. Just a lot of fun and actually has a solid story, even though I think the story may be more about Mr. Banks then the kids but that is not this article. It is true depending on the scope of your production of Mary Poppins you could go crazy, with all of the props, flying, singing, and dancing. The show is full of technical challenges that I think just get overlooked. May be just because they are “simple” or just not HUGE changes in the set but when you sit and look at it there are quite a lot of things happening.

Also in this situation would it be worth just renting the touring show? Or having the touring show come in for the length of your run? I do now know but I have seen Mary Poppins the touring show and it might be worth asking the question.
