Is Neclumi the Future of Jewelry?

Design Milk: I’m a big jewelry nerd so when I spotted Neclumi (thanks to Gregory!) I fell in love. Could it be the future of jewelry? I’m not sure… but I’m excited to see where it goes.

Created by the people at Pangenerator, Neclumi is a projected, interactive necklace.

Honestly this is one of the dumbest things I've seen in a while. I'm all for new technology, but do people really think that this could become "the future of jewelry?" if you like the projection or not that if for you to decide, but who would chose to wear a picoprojector in between their chest all day? I don't know if there is any possible solution to make the comfortable never mind look appealing. Only people who would want the most attention would ever chose to wear this "jewelry." I do think however that this could be a great addition to a performance and has huge potential within the entertainment industry.

What even is this right now? Who would want to wear a projector on their chest to have it project weird lines on their necks all day? This is just so weird, would this not be a distraction to yourself and like everyone around you. Plus if you are in brighter places you cannot really use this necklace because it is a projector and it works better in the dark. Does this really even count as jewelry, it is a projector that projects media onto your body. What if I just walked around with a large projector in front of me and had that project clothes on me? That is not really clothing just images of clothing projected on me. I would not call this the future of jewelry or the future of anything.

Ok but get this: going outside. As an art piece, this is cool. If we do look at jewelry in general though, it's not practical. Neither is this, but I wouldn't call this jewelry. Also, I have to have my phone on me all the time to wear the jewelry? How about no. I won't even go into the fact that I also have to wear a pico on my chest. That's not cute at all. As a concept, this is cool.... kind of. I don't really like the designs as much and I think the selections are limited. Plus, there's nothing tangible in the jewelry. What if someone hacked your jewelry and put obscene words around your neck. You probably wouldn't notice. Next!

In cheesy sci-fi depictions of the future, the fashion sense often seems non-nonsensical. I wonder if things like this is how fashion like that starts. It is an interesting concept, but seems on the impractical side. Sure it is a cool demonstration of mini-projector tech. But it is completely ridiculous. I could see that artistic concept behind projecting jewelry or things onto people, but describing it as the future of jewelry is a stretch.

This is not the future of jewelry. The jewelry industry makes way too much money (especially during the holiday season) to ever give way to these images made up of light that look more like wounds and gashes on the throat. I think that they're intriguing and interesting to look at, and I could see using this in a theatre piece (especially the hole-one that reacts to sound), but they are by no means ever going to gain the popularity that actual physical jewelry has in the modern world.

Is Neclumi the Future of Jewelry? NO. This is really dumb. Having to wear a projector all day on your chest just to have silly projections on your neck is not jewelry. And if you look at the model, her head is always so stiff because it has to be or else the projection will be on her face and ruins the point of being a "necklace". The point of jewelry is to highlight and ornate specific parts of the body. A necklace helps articulate the neck, collar bone, and chest. This projection ruins all of that, it eliminates the person and uses them as a projection screen. I will give it to them that it's cool that the projections are sound/motion sensitive. But other than that, I have no other interest in seeing where this project goes.

I think this projection jewelry might be ahead of its time. It's not a subtle move forward in fashion in any way. If anything it is the most distracting thing anybody could be wearing. Maybe when 3D printed clothes are ore acceptable then this form of jewelry can be a nice compliment to an outfit, but wearing bright and reactionary projections with your t-shirt and jeans to the grocery store is guaranteed many strange looks. Maybe Neclumi is the future of jewelry, but I highly doubt it will become an acceptable form of jewelry anytime soon.

I don't understand. This is incredibly creepy and strange looking. I wear jewelry because it adds to my ensemble, not because it's the main focal point of it. I don't need something glowing on my neck because I am not a character in a sci-fi movie and I don't feel like I should ever need to be looking like I walked right out of the book "The Specials" because those people were genetically modified. Why would someone look at this effect and think jewelry? I look at it and I think of performance art. Also, you'd only be wearing jewelry in the dark, which is also weird. I can't wait until Lady Gaga or Katy Perry shows up with a little projector on their chest at a red carpet event. I really cannot wait for magazines to tear this apart. I also cannot wait for it to be paired up with an LED dress. That'll be particularly special.
