Rediscovering the Lost Art of Research

Sightlines: For theatre artists, research is central to their work –particularly visual research. It can also become one of those problem areas to teach. Professors may ask, "Why don't my students get it?" and students chime in, "Where am I supposed to find it?" Hearing these questions and seeing students turn in undersized, pixilated images makes it an important topic worth addressing.

I am so glad to hear about Idee. When working on designs or projects for school in general the most difficult part is always to find the reference pictures to work off of. Search engines like Google Images never seem to be helpful in picture quality and size (that is if you find a picture that would help). It seems like such a foreign concept to physically look up pictures in books these days, yet at times it remains the only answer when the internet fails you. I am very excited indeed to try this out!!!

What an incredible tool. Sam is right....google images is trash. Its incredible timely too..as group of us find ourselves with a lot of susan tsu projects in hopes of impressing her...we need something to build the foundations of our project. This tool will defintely be used frequently. I am EXTREMELY fascinated with the color filter search option... that is nifty. Can't wait to take my projects to a whole new level with the help of these resources!

This is amazing that you can type in a few words and you will basically get what you want. I am always frustrated when I am trying to get research for shows and projects and cannot find what I want. I just started the design process for a show hear at CMU. I will definitely be trying to uses these images. It is great that most of them are free and do not hold any copyright so I don't need to worry about doing anything illegal. I bet this would be a great resource for media designers with them always looking for good pictures that they can modify and make better. I know that some of them get frustrated sometimes when can’t find what they need in the resources available. I will be trying these websites and if they are good I will be recommending them to other people.

This is great! I am so happy to see that there are opportunities for designers to make their research easier. It is sad that so many people prefer doing research on a computer rather than in a library, but at least by using these tools a designer can find better quality images that better convey his or her design concepts. Although Google is great and helpful when beginning very basic research, using these sorts of databases will prove very helpful when delving further into more specific design ideas and concepts.

This will revolutionize the way we research. I'm incredibly impressed by this innovation and am looking forward to seeing it's impacts. I'm sure that this tool will become the more prevalent research facilitator. At first I was really skeptical of the title, because I do not consider research to be a lost art. This just drastically changes that art.
