Ghost The Musical Will Play Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre

Playbill.com: The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, which currently hosts the undead Addams Family clan, will be haunted anew this spring when Ghost The Musical, the London stage production based on the Academy Award-winning film, opens on Broadway April 23, 2012.

The article undercuts the "high-tech" aspect of this production, but the trailer for the West End production is really worth a watch and a consideration of how media is changing the game. The stage is fully boxed-in by LED panels, allowing the designers to construct some really stunning panoramic environments. The LED walls also assist the magical effects in creating some of the ghostly illusions that come into play with a supernatural story like this. Add to that some really brilliant music and a classic story well beloved by the American people, and I'm foreseeing a big hit when it comes over here.

Why are there so many film adaptations doing well on Broadway. We have an amazing trickle down effect happening in entertainment now where there are a large number of movies which are remakes and there are a lot of film adaptations on Broadway. Have we seriously lost the ability to bring new stories to life on a regular basis? I am amazingly disturbed by the lack of creativity and the bigger issue is that it sells well. While it might give me job security in the future to work on a film adaptation I still think it is a shame. Also I thought it was an American affliction but this came from London which means it is a global phenomenon.

Oh look, they're making a stage musical out of a twenty-year-old movie. How fresh and exciting. I will try to reserve judgment until I hear more about the production, but I find it sad that Broadway is in the mindset that adding songs and special effects to movies that did just fine without them will pull in more people than original work. But, who knows, maybe Ghost works really well on stage and with musical numbers. It definitely won't be the same without Whoopi Goldberg, though.
