Students can't sneak by in this class
NorthJersey.com: "Students in a lecture class at Carnegie Mellon University were packing up to leave when Elliott Curtis, their instructor, called them back to their seats, saying he'd forgotten a key part of the lesson."

I think its funny that they call it the student college. But i do think its cool CMU offers StuCo classes. Its kinda sad that no drama students can take or teach them because of crew calls etc. but that is the nature of the business.
You could still take the course with crew calls, you would just have to hope your call doesn't land on the day the class is or just know you are going to miss a class or two or the StuCo. The real problem is that the courses fill up to fast!
I love that there are student taught courses. I do agree with the first comment in that I wish more theatre students could teach or take part in these classes, unfortunately our schedules are too packed to allow this.
I'm taking a StuCo, and the teachers are pretty understanding of the issue of crew call. I really like the idea behind StuCos since they really do seem to revolve around a very specific thing people want to learn about. I wish there were more of em, and that they didn't meet at night, but that's a separate topic.
StuCo classes are an amazing ides and good for both the students in the class and the students teaching it. THe students taking the class get to learn more about a topic that interests them and the student who is gaining teaching and communication skills by teaching something they love.
I was taking a StuCo, but had to drop it due to missing more than three. Sads. I've tried a lot of StuCos during my career here and not enjoyed many of them (they tend not to really be worth the time commitment for so little units). However, I'm incredibly interested in teaching one in media studies because I feel that CMU's cross-media department is greatly lacking.
I love how as I started reading this and read Carnegie Mellon's name, the first thing that came to mind was, " This is gonna make CMU students look bad for trying to skip out on class, but it ended up making them look even better them look even better for teaching a course as an undergrad -- just thought I'd point that out. When I first learned about StoCos I was really excited even though I didn't really feel like taking one, but it might be possible for those that want to if they work things out somehow with thier calls, but I don't know to well how that works yet, though.
I think classes like this can add more to a student's education than you could ever imagine. The great number of diverse skills that is necessary to complete projects like making a shoe forces people to expand their minds and explore many different kinds of art, design and techniques.
