Wicked opens in Dallas as first Broadway tour in U.S. after pandemic
CultureMap Dallas: Broadway has announced it is officially reopening in September 2021, but Dallas audiences will get their musical fix even sooner.
When Wicked opens at the Music Hall at Fair Park on August 3, 2021, it will not only signal the return of Dallas Summer Musicals but also be the first touring Broadway show in the country to open.

Surprisingly, after sixteen years of living in Dallas, I still haven't seen a Dallas Summer Musical. As soon as I read the headline for this article I went to their website to look at tickets. Since this will be the first Broadway touring show to open post Covid I'd love to go see it this August. Since finishing this article, I've already texted six different friends to ask if they would want to go with me. Wicked is also such an iconic show to end this theatrical dry spell with. Hopefully, by the time this show begins, things with Covid haven't gotten worse. Especially in Texas, I worry about Covid safety since mask wearing has become a little more lax than it should be. The idea that they also plan to sell the house with no social distancing in only a few months is also concerning. While I want to buy tickets and be excited now it's also hard not to feel like I should air on the side of caution and wait to see if it gets pushed back.
This is so exciting! Broadway reopening in September is huge news, and I am surprised that they are already opening for tours. However, I wonder if it is something to consider for touring destinations of the covid infection rate of that area. I know that Dallas is a big city and a hotspot for the virus, but I suppose New York is even worse. I hope that good news like this keeps coming, but I am afraid that people might take it as a sign that things are returning back to normal and practice unsafe protocol, like not staying 6 feet apart and wearing masks in public because they feel things are getting safer. If anything, seeing plans like this should enforce public safety more as it would be the biggest shame if such plans of broadway and tours get delayed or canceled due to people becoming unsafe. Also, this may be a great way to get more people to try and get vaccinated, which is great news!
