Chinese Company Projects Video Game QR Code Above Shanghai Using Drones

gamerant.com: Over a thousand drones took to the night sky in Shanghai, China last weekend for an elaborate light show. While drone shows have become an increasingly common practice in the region, this performance, in particular, came with an unusual ending - a massive, scannable QR code.

This is certainly an interesting concept and a new way of using technology. I find it amusing that some people were really angry that they did this because (at least in the US) we have little bi-planes that fly around and literally drag billboards behind them. Of course, you wouldn’t be able to scan a moving target like that. The technology for holding all those drones in place must be pretty sophisticated because any small deviation could cause the QR code to be unusable. 1500 complicated pieces of equipment is a lot to keep all operational. I don’t foresee any specific uses for drones in theater, but I’m sure they will crop up with other uses in the entertainment industry. It’s interesting that it was also the tail end of a performance because that almost makes it more ok in my mind. I don’t know the FAA rules in the US, but I’m sure pulling off a stunt like that would require cutting through a significant amount of red tape.
