Augmented Reality is a really hot topic right now, no doubt in part due to shutdown of the entertainment industry. During the summer, I had the opportunity to redesign a venue for the future. During the project, my team investigated the use of extended reality (virtual, augmented, and mixed realities) modes for enhancing the audience experience as well as opening up new markets. However, we came to the conclusion that for extended reality to find its niche in the entertainment industry, the technology needs to advance a bit further. Unfortunately, until we see 5G speeds become commonplace, more XR devices in the price range of the Oculus Quest, Samsung Gear, etc, and standardization of 3D file formats and processing flows, effectively utilizing XR technology for entertainment will be a costly and inefficient venture. As such, it is really exciting to see NexTech AR Solutions partner with CMU for further research in this field.

I remember first learning about Augmented Reality years ago and thinking that AR was the future that I was watching on tv. The thought of digitally altering a physical space for entertainment and practical matters is incredibly fascinating to me. Most recently, I was buying furniture online and noticed a feature that allowed me to hold my phone camera up to my room and align the transition from the floor to the wall as a baseline and poof, the furniture I was looking at was virtually sitting in my room in what appeared to be a fairly accurate scale. While the potential for augmented reality extends far beyond furniture shopping, it is really cool to know that I go to a University that hosts industry leaders in developing technologies that already have an impact on my life. I can only imagine the possibilities of virtual conferences when augmented reality reaches a more advanced level.
