My family is an Apple family to a fault sometimes, but this sounds really cool. I have only watched a couple of episodes on AppleTV+, and augmented reality would add a whole new realm of content. In regards to theatre, I think at some point there is room for augmented reality to add an entirely new dimension to the entertainment industry. I contributed and attended an art gallery exhibition that utilized augmented reality. Viewers could scan pieces with their phone and would see a video of the artist talking about their life and the piece in particular. This could be easily incorporated into Playbills and programs, even posters, to expand on the information on the page. Beyond that, it could even be worked into the set or possibly the show. I would hesitate to alter the shows themselves, but I would love to see AR worked into the preshow of a piece. Even for Apple and AppleTV+, the perfection of this technology is a few years off, but the potential is limitless.
I think AR and VR are media with far more potential than is being put out for it. Obviously the reason for this is because better headsets are very expensive, and therefore inaccessible. It would be an amazing way to bring theatrical art to people within their homes, and bolster the theater industry because of that. I so wonder if this would mean that Apple is making a VR headset, and just another piece for the consumer to by in order to get a full experience. One of my least favorite things are pay-to-win games and (as an Apple user) having Apple products does feel like that sometimes. Do you want to protect your devices? Buy /our/ insurance. You want to keep the music you bought on iTunes? Buy another phone. You want to charge your new phone? Buy a completely new charger shape, making every product that charges off of an Apple device with the old port obsolete. I feel like I couldn’t get a device from a different company if I wanted to, and if Apple does come out with a headset, the people who are already paying for Apple TV+ would need to dish out an additional few hundred dollars just to get the full extent of what they paid for.
