Free Kits for Students Put the ‘Well’ in Welcome
www.cmu.edu/news: Carnegie Mellon University is providing a free Wellness Kit to each student living on or off campus in preparation for the fall semester. The Wellness Kit contains two CMU-branded cloth facial coverings, a 3.38-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, a digital thermometer, a card summarizing A Tartan’s Responsibility and use and care instructions for the facial coverings.

I think that it is really good that CMU is providing these kits for everyone whether living on or off-campus. I especially think the face masks are great people they are reusable and if everyone is given them there is going to be less of an excuse for people by saying they don’t have a face mask. And since face masks are required on campus at all times it is great they are providing them for everyone. I think the hand sanitizer and the wipes are a nice gesture and will be helpful for a bit but they aren’t going to last that long, and since the items are hard to find I hope that there will be more available as the semester continues. The thermometer is nice to have and especially makes sense for on-campus students, but for everyone living off-campus we have had to fill out the daily assessment during our 14-day quarantine where we need to take our temperature, and we can’t pick up the kits until after the 14-day quarantine so I feel like most people will already have a thermometer. But you know, have two thermometers isn’t the worst thing in the world. Overall I appreciate CMU providing these kits for us especially because I have friends at other schools who, if they want a school face covering, they have to buy it.
I really appreciate the thought of CMU giving out wellness kits to all students, even the ones living off-campus in the Pittsburgh area. While I have not gotten mine yet, at least I know where I can go get it. I really think the most valuable item is the two reusable face masks that even have a Carnegie Mellon logo on them. The consumables like wipes and hand sanitizer are a nice gesture even though they either will not be used or used incredibly quickly by students. Finally, the thermometer is a really smart move on the university’s part especially because of the requirement to take your temperature every morning, being supported is always nice. After seeing many other Univerisitys’ wellness kits online, I think CMU really focused on the necessary materials and avoided the proper amount of fluff. Overall, I really appreciate CMU providing these kits and I am excited to get mine next week.
Like Gabe and Annika said, this is a nice gesture from the school and could help students for a short period of time. Hand sanitizer prices have increased to crazy prices, having that handy will be great for students. CMU is really putting forth effort to help students return to Pittsburgh and feel as safe as possible. Like I stated earlier, the only downside of this is how short term the kit will last you. Other than the thermometer, the hand sanitizer and wipes will only last you for a couple weeks if used as frequently as it should. Looking on social media to see what other universities and colleges are doing, CMU is definitely better than most. A lot of schools barely have guidelines or are doing a terrible job at following them. The 2-week mandatory quarantine and the wellness kits make me feel more comfortable about returning to campus for class and I hope it helps put other students at ease too.
