Karabiners with integrated pulleys - A review of the DMM Revolver Rig and Petzl Rollclip

www.abaris.co.uk: Climbers will be aware of the DMM Revolver karabiners, innovative little connectors which feature a small pulley wheel, designed to reduce the friction drag of a rope when it was pulled through the karabiner. A nifty design!

Having done a fair amount of climbing in the past, I can see where these carabineers with integrated pulleys would come in handy. What I fear is that ropes could get caught in the mechanism of the pulley. Also, climbing is not strictly vertical; the angles could interfere with the proper working of the pulley/carabineers. Alton Brown, host of Cutthroat Kitchen on Food Network (and Good Eats, which isn’t on the air anymore), often refers to tools as being unitaskers or multitaskers. His theory is that the only unitasker allowed in his kitchen is a fire extinguisher. While I appreciate this philosophy, I don’t think that this should apply to items used for lifting. I would be interested in trying one, but something tells me that it isn’t going to live up to the glowing recommendation it got on the website.
