This is interesting. I opened the article thinking it was going to specify how to make sure everything is good for the production because it said "finishing touches", but seeing its actually about different companies that are very successful in creating a vision mad me appreciate this article more. Students who have no clue what kind of companies are out there seems to think that Disney, Universal, and Cirque are main places to go after studying theatre all of their life. However, there is so much more out there than we know. Reading through this list, I'm not the most familiar with "Stoke Poges Range Armoury Services" for weaponry, "Chromed Up Ltd" where they chrome items with paint, and "Spur Creative Workshop" which is a company focused in the making of props. This different companies all sound amazing. I would love to join one of them someday and be able to create the same magic they are doing.
I was actually expecting this article to be on how to enhance a complete design I’m actually really surprise to see that instead it’s focused on advertising for different companies? A couple of questions on the legitimacy of this article. It doesn’t say whether or not this is a paid for list, the companies big for spots then are evaluated. Or is the article writer going out and evaluating the companies individually and deciding what’s best? In that case, what is the criterion for making this list? Affordability, ease of use, turnaround time? There are too many variable to consider before just blindingly trusting the names of this article. Also it wasn’t very clear as to what the purpose is, I would have liked some actual information on making sure my show was a technical success, and while these production companies do help to reach that goal. No clarity has really been made as to what I, a designer, may or may not be doing wrong.
It is interesting to note the specialization in many of these disciplines –while many of these UK companies are providers of set materials for performance or display, the subsets are endless: candles, polystyrene carving, specialty cycles, etc. Although such specificity may limit the frequency of use, these companies service a multitude of organizations: theater companies, including printing onto polycarbonate and plywood, metal fabrication, and productions in glass-fiber. These various aspects make these companies an authority in their various specializations in the entertainment industry and their ultimate longevity.
