Putting Tron's Special Effects Together
Tested: Seeing Tron when it first came out in the theaters was an insane experience. You knew by word of mouth it was going to be a major step forward in special effects technology -something state of the art, like when Star Wars first exploded - and many young filmgoers, like myself, were completely blown away. I had no idea the movie was a flop until many years after the fact, and I was completely flabbergasted to learn this.

Most of the times you don’t really hear about major flops in the film industry unless it was one like Waterworld. Even though that film came about 20 years ago, I guess because of the budget it was given, and the effects that could have been good but weren’t contributed to a poorly done movie. Since I grew up with computer animation being a ‘thing’ I don’t think it was too overwhelming when I saw those kinds of movies. Of course I was fascinated by Star Wars, and Jurassic Park blew me into a giant world of dinosaurs. I know back in the day when films were starting to add something new and exciting, it would give the audience a whole new thrill. Almost similar to horror movies, but with those we know we are going to be scared, just not overwhelmed by the cinematography. Tron was a little too far ahead of the times, but if it would have been released later, it might not have done as well to being with.
My Dad often talks about TRON and when it came out. He truly thought it was the future. He told me that he went to the store a couple days before and bought a brand new, and very heavy, RCA Tv in 1982. The first movie he ever watched on it was TRON and he couldn't believe how awesome it was that these characters were glowing and moving around set that was generated by computer to showcase computers. The combination of animation and computer generated environments really set the bar for all future entertainment. Special effects no longer had to created in the film, they could be applied afterwards using the computer and could produce exactly what the producers and director want. I was and still am fascinated by the special effects in movies but i know that TRON started it all.
