Pro Sound Web: It’s a Monday afternoon and I get a phone call from a local production company to work a press event the following day at a local race track (local being an hour and half away).
I accept the gig and the next day hop on my bike (the motor-driven type) and go to the track, and specifically, the large circus-type tent where the event is being staged.

This is a cool story, but I think that I’m starting to understand that there is no way to be totally prepared for 100% of what you will encounter at a gig, and to be prepared for 99% would require a truck load of adapters, cables, tapes, and gear.
Personally, trying to perfect a kit has felt like a losing battle. At a certain point I think you just have to accept that you will arrive unprepared at some point in time, and that it’s just not worth it to carry around items you need for the last 2 or 3 percent.
This story is cool, and the technician managed to make it all work, and he happened to have everything he needed in his bag, and that makes it a special story. I’d be interested to know how many times his bag had failed him, how many Radio Shack trips he’s needed to make, and how many times he just didn’t need his bag at all.
