For David Henry Hwang's 'Chinglish,' a case of bad timing in China

latimes.com: David Henry Hwang knows firsthand about the difficulties Westerners can face while doing business in China. His latest play, "Chinglish," a comedy that opened on Broadway in 2011 and is now having its local premiere at South Coast Repertory through Feb. 24, tells the story of an inexperienced American businessman who owns a sign company and his attempts to navigate the country's mix of free-for-all capitalism and Communist Party politics.

Well..... that timing sucks. Its a bit sad that the Chinese government is such that they wouldn't approve such a play, but regardless of the government approval, it would be a bad idea to produce this in China right now. It would be protested or not attended because of the subject matter and the media hype that it is sure to generate. That's really a shame, because the play itself sounds fascinating- something that Westernization-obsessed Chinese audiences would be sure to enjoy in other circumstances. This reminds me of an article from last week that was talking about how China is invading Hollywood- this would be much the same.
