Pee-wee is back, and on Broadway
PRI.ORG: "What if someone could call out 'mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho' and make Pee-wee's Playhouse live again? Paul Reubens, the show's creator and star, has done just that. Twenty years after the show retired, Pee-wee Herman and the playhouse gang have been resurrected in a Broadway play. Sudio360's Kurt Andersen, who describes the show as 'psychedelic, surrealistic, smart, campy slapstick,' wants to know why Reubens is doing it, especially after refusing to 'do' Pee-wee for all these years.

It's very refreshing to see that people have seemed to forgive and forget about Pee-Wee's incident in the movie theatre. Paul Rueben has devoted his life to entertaining children and has worked so hard to make it all possible. It's unfortunate that the media had to intrude into his personal life and cause him to go into hiding somewhat for a time. This comeback is well-desrved and Rueben has definitely earned it.
I LOVED PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE.
In a certain light, this makes me happy to see it return (WITH Paul Reubans, no less) and in a venue that is different from its original television show.
At the same time, I wonder at the show itself. During a time in theatre where EVERYTHING is being made into a musical (The Addams Family, seriously?) that could possible sell, I'm suspect that there's anything but an attempt to cash in a little more on my childhood with this production. Sadly, the article was slim on facts about the production itself; which would have been comforting to have had.
I can't believe Pee-Wee is back. I never thought I'd see this day. Especially after Paul's moment of indecision years ago.
I wonder how today's children will respond to Pee-Wee? Will they love it as my generation and the one before me did. Are the lessons he is teaching still relevant today or do they need to kick it up for the video and media kids? Was the Pee-Wee formula timeless?
It will be interesting to see and only time will tell. I don't think this show will run more than a year. Hopefully it was cheap to put up with the original set in storage. If not, the it was an expensive square one, well two. Everything was designed already...
