Oedipus the ex-con, in a barrio

StarTribune.com: "'Oedipus El Rey' begins in a barrage of sound: slamming doors, shrill whistles and pounding feet. As the actors take their places on a stage surrounded by bars, their echoing voices turn a cacophony of taunts, gibes and curses into a beautifully evocative chorus.

this sounds like a really interesting production not only because it retells Oedipus Rex with this new spin, but also because it adds the element of the backstory into the plot. In Sophocles' play, we only learn of Oedipus' past through retelling, and I think it's really interesting that this production team chose to represent that onstage, since as the reviewer mentioned, it adds to the feeling of inevitability that the audience feels for Oedipus throughout the play-most people go in knowing the story, and how it will end. The sense of this is heightened when we are being shown just how Oedipus got into the predicament he finds himself in, and how impossible it will be to get out.
