Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Forget about the crocus.
Ignore the signals sent by Mardi Gras, the opening of the neighborhood Dairy Queen or the appearance of barbecue tools at Target.
There is no better sign that spring is on the way than the appearance of a hand-lettered poster proclaiming a production of 'The Wizard of Oz' at your local high school.

There are a lot of activities and games that unknowingly teach people how to get along with each other. Some experiences can teach you more about how to get along in the world than anything else you've done and give you great memories along the way. Of all the activities to put kids in theater/dance hits all the highlights.
The thing that really touched me in this article was the commentary on teamwork, especially as normal classwork is de-emphasizing opportunities to have the pure put-up-or-shut-up collaborative experiences that student athletes and other organizations are characterized for. The experience of putting up a high school musical is one of intense collaboration - between performers and their peers, between the cast and the orchestra, and increasingly between the company as a whole and the school. Training in the theatre is a no-excuses way of teaching functional communication and effective teamwork, while still encouraging artistic expression and development.
