Art Plus: A brush with the theatre

The Independent: "These days the cross-over between art and drama is nothing new. You can see theatre in pubs, tunnels, boxing rings, on the streets and in art galleries. But what is slightly more unusual is when the scripts for the actors are written, not by playwrights as you might expect, but by artists instead. At London's Whitechapel Gallery later this month that's exactly what's set to happen as their annual Art Plus party – this year it's Art Plus Drama – kicks off with six one-off artist/actor pairings.

I think this is a very important article. So often people forget that theatre is a practical use of art around us, and that the skills that are used to put on shows are put on by artists. Integrating these two disciplines holds a lot of potential for what theatre could be. Drama and art could be interchangeable; art could use drama and drama should use art. Together, great and innovative pieces could be created. Artists could use drama as a practical outlet for their craft, while dramatists should use art skills to improve their work. Together, these two disciplines could work together perfectly.

i agree with Sophia in the fact that it is important. Another aspect that makes this difficult is if the artist doesn't realize what factors go into putting on theater. First semester i worked on a collaboration project with the art dept and the artists idea was to explore the human body in a show setting. She made it really difficult and several of the designers wanted to quit a week before tech. And because it was a class, she wanted to grade on the effort and hrs put in every week. So if they were getting 6 credits, than she wanted them to put in 6 hrs a week. The problem with that is that people like the run crew didn't have anything to do until tech week. It wasn't a great experience,
