Advice for South Coast Repertory's new artistic director

latimes.com: "Have you noticed the way a few of the region's venerable nonprofit theaters have been turning into a marketing playground of star vehicles, empty-headed musicals and commercial retreads? The managers of these outfits, more impresarios than visionaries, seem to judge their own success by media buzz and box-office bumps. Connection to a community has become virtually an afterthought.

I always found these Articles interesting because you can gleam what the community and reviewers think of what a company is good at. It's simple list of what normally is expected of that company by the community. The article itself seemed like a pleading for SCR to stay their course and not go the way of CTG and Geffen. SCR's work is top notch and I hope that Masterson can help SCR to stay the course and grow.

Seeing shows at SCR for the past few years, I definitely agree with some of his sentiments, including his judgment of The Heiress being quite lackluster, and Fences being a wonderful production. But on the whole, despite some flawed productions, each season at SCR provides a wonderful variety of new works and classic audience-pleasers in both of their performance spaces. And McNulty's words of wisdom should be followed by every theater company.
