Sneaking a peek at Girlfriend

Berkeley Rep Blog: "In between rainstorms, you can tell it's spring here in the beautiful Bay Area. And in spring, as they say, a young man's fancy turns to love."

This has me slightly torn. Because even though I think that this could be and probably is a very interesting new piece it is once again a musical based on music that has already been produced. However, perhaps it falls under the category of something along the lines of The Who's Tommy. The story is already in the music. I guess we will have to wait and see. I do however think its great that they are doing a new production with no guaranteed audience. And a new gay story at that which can be even more risky. I think its great that gay love stories are starting to work their way into main stream media.

YES! I'm sorry, but this sounds way too cool!!! Molly I hear you, but I think interpreting the music in this way will bring it back into the world, in a light most people have never heard. I know I've never heard of Matthew Sweet, so this for me is particularly awesome. This is such your typical coming of age love story, but it's okay because you know you all love these awful cheesefest musicals, because I do, despite them being done so many times. Hurray for contemporary issues, and good old music being thrown into the ring of contemporary theatre. The contrast is wicked, and I for one can't wait for more videos to come out!
