A country torn apart by strife offers so many stories of suffering that the idea of distilling such a cataclysm into a couple of hours’ traffic at the theater can seem a futile enterprise. Perhaps it’s no wonder few contemporary playwrights take up the cause, even if they are faulted for ignoring the large-scale horrors of the world to offer instead intimate dramas of marital woe or fanciful trips through history books."
