Spider-Man The Musical: Singing Spidey Will Dance Across Broadway Sooner Than Expected
I09: "Julie Taymor's webslinging Broadway musical featuring Peter Parker has upped its release date to 2009 instead of the original 2010. Also, set descriptions and a review of the Spidey workshop between Taymor's old cast from Across The Universe, Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess, have finally leaked out. I can't wait to hear these two sing again, I hope they go all the way to the stage without getting replaced or leaving for a film."

Between this and Shrek and the countless other movie--> broadway musicals that have recently been released or are comign to broadway soon, I am very sad at the way musicals are going. They are becoming less and less about the theatrics and mroe about making people come because the movie was good. This doesnt breed quality in my mind.
I think if this musical has any initial success, it will be either because the audience is a fan of the story of Spiderman or the recent success of the actors from 'Across the Universe.' It would take a lot of serious work to make this play anything else but cheesy, which is the direction that many movie-turned-broadway-musicals are going.
From these spies and rumors it definitely sounds like this will be a a musical with extremely unique visual and technical qualities. Does this mean it will be good? I wouldn't put money on it, but I think the artistic team involved probably understands the unique complications they are facing from doing a comic -> stage adaptation.
This isn't the first example of a comic-book-franchise-turned-musical. There was an attempt to create a theatrical version of Batman in 2004. I may be a fan of the source material, but I really can't see how such a production would work out - same for Spiderman. I have great trust in Julie Taymor, but no respect what soever for the movie franchise.
Paul Dini, co-creator of the original Batman animated series, made his comments about a musical Batman in an episode of Batman Beyond, viewable here (highly recommended for comedic value).
Wow, this is kinda crazy. Not only are animated movies like Shrek hitting the stage, but now Spiderman. When I initially read the article I couldn't help but see Spiderman crossing the stage in a kick line. That's a little odd, but anyways, I think that this is a really interesting concept for a show. There is so much room for the technical effects, which are always loads of fun.
Wow....I don't even know where to start. The concept for the show is interesting. The producers definitely have a semi-solid fan base in the comic book world, but I don't know if theater is ready for comic book characters on stage. I have the same image as Liz stuck in my head (Spiderman in a kick line), but the show has potential. I think that the show will (hopefully) have really good production value and special effects. The question is how will the book and the acting be? From what the article says, both of those seem to be going well.
Is B'Way ready for Spiderman? I don't know.
