New York Post: "HAL Prince was watching the Screen Actors Guild awards on TV last January when he turned to his wife and started babbling. 'Get dressed,' she said. 'We're going to the hospital.'"
I think that Mr. Prince has a very refreshing outlook on what Broadway should be. Personally, I'm getting pretty sick of the flashy, fluffy stuff enjoying Broadway success these days, and I long for the days when shows had depth, substance, a decent plot, and true artistry. Sure, it is important to make some money, otherwise you won't be able to do anymore shows, but the overwhelming emphasis on profit is what is driving quality down. By appealing to the lowest common denominator, producers are assuring themselves an audience, but they are betraying the integrity of their art and the art of those involved in the production. I'm sure a quality play could be successful...maybe not as successful as Legally Blonde, but it will make money while retaining its artistic integrity.
