Building, growing images express artist's hope
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Carnegie Mellon University art professor Susanne Slavick is one such artist, and her work is now the subject of the '2008 Artist of the Year' exhibition currently on display at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in Shadyside."

This is a really interesting form of artistic expression. I like that she is looking for hope, but what she is doing almost makes the entire situation more tragic. These places will never be the same again, even if they are rebuilt. I would love to know what the people who lived through these events would think of these paintings.
I agree with Chapel, the art form of both of the artists they talk about are very unique and should be given credit for inventing their own kind of expression, so it's great that they are now recognized artists in Pittsburgh. It's also interesting the point Chapel brings up on whether or not the people who saw these new re-created areas of their city would either accept this as art or become offended by what the artist has added to the picture.
Anything that brings more awareness to the devastation happening in other parts of the world is highly valuable. It seems that too often, any sort of disaster that does not affect us directly goes unnoticed. She's developed a great form of art while raising awareness.
This reminds me of the graffiti artist Banksy. One of his favorite devices is to hand paint things into famous pieces of art. He makes political statements by putting litter or security cameras into monets. It is incredibly jarring, and it is an effective way to convey an artistic message.
It is great to see art which makes a a strong statement using positive hopeful images. I often feel like a lot of art aims to make a political statement by reminding us only of the negative aspects of situations in order to provoke a strong emotion.However I feel like these artist's images of hope manage to extract just as strong a feeling.
