Best and worst of theatre

TheStar.com: "It was the best of the times, it ... oh, you know the drill. Our two major theatre festivals (Stratford and Shaw) dominate the summer theatre scene and they aim so high, that when they fall, it can sure be a belly-flopper."

I've never really liked how Katherine is portrayed in most shows I've seen. I saw Kiss Me Kate for the first time this summer, and she was this rough and tumble, Annie Get Your Gun kinda girl. Then the end of the show and poof! She turns into a sweet, docile little woman all ready to clean the house. Why does it have to be so black and white? It seems to me that there should be a better way to portray that famous character.

The remark on Taming of the Shrew is, to say the least, abominable. However, there is something to be said about such a review. People love to experiment with Shakespeare and sometimes there's success but sometimes there is failure. The portrayal of Katherine may not have pleased the critic but it probably challenged the audience to look at the story a new way. Even if it was horrible, like this reporter comments, it still says something about the director to take such a bold creative choice in his work.
